I’ve loved stories ever since I was old enough to operate a flashlight, chasing X-wings and dragons from my darkened bedroom deep into school nights, but it wasn’t until later in life that I realized writing was something I could actually do. Some key teachers encouraged my creativity along the way, but my writing classes seemed so heavy with lists of rules to follow, and so far from the adventures I had at night.

What I know now is that writing is about moving people – ourselves, and others – with our words. As a homeschool Dad, that’s what I try to inspire in my children and my students. Whether we’re reading great stories, learning to write paragraphs and essays, or writing poetry—our words can be so full of power.

I have undergraduate degrees in English and Communication, an MFA in Writing, and a Doctorate in Intercultural Studies. I spent ten years with my family working and homeschooling in mainland China, but we presently live in North Florida. In addition to reading and writing, I love learning about different cultures, especially via the food!
